This instructor-led course is required for workers who are exposed to the hazard of falling from heights, and who have completed a Basic Safety Awareness training course under O. Reg. 213/91.
This course is valid for three (3) years after which a refresher is required.
This Instructor-led course has been approved by the Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) as meeting the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development (MLITSD) Working at Heights Training Program Standard. Which establish's a mandatory minimum standard for high quality and consistent training for workers who work at heights in the Province of Ontario.
The purpose of a working at heights training program that meets the requirements set out in this standard is to:
- Strengthen workplace safety culture by elevating the profile and importance of preventing falls from heights;
- Provide workers who may be exposed to the hazard of falling from heights with adequate knowledge about fall hazards and general safety practices to work safely at heights;
- Provide workers who use personal fall protection equipment with sufficient knowledge about its purpose and use; and,
- Reduce the number of fall-from-heights incidents, injuries and fatalities.
Course Outline
This program will be delivered in a traditional classroom "instructor-led" training format, where participants will demonstrate an ability to use and inspect fall protection equipment, effectively don, adjust, and doff their equipment, and understand when, where and how the equipment is to be used. Participants will demonstrate an ability to effectively apply the hierarchy of controls to assess realistic workplace situations and to follow standard safety procedures.
While delivering the Working at Heights program, instructors/evaluators will use both formative and summative assessment methods to support and evaluate the transfer of learning. Participants will complete a written test to verify that the key concepts have been understood. A minimum grade of 75% must be achieved to successfully complete the training program. Learning outcomes requiring demonstration must be performed satisfactorily and verified by the Training Evaluator. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to provide comments on training received using a digital training evaluation form. The BASES Working at Heights program fulfills the learning outcomes for both the Basic Theory Module and the Practical Module of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development’s (MLITSD) Chief Prevention Officer approved, Working at Heights Training Program Standard.
* Equipment used in this training program will be provided by BASES.
