Description

This blended training course provides Ontario Regulation 297/13 compliance, builds safe work foundations through hazard identification and controls, and introduces learners to regional safety culture. Successful completion is required for entry to member sites and is valid for three years. The course is delivered in two parts.

Course Structure

Part 1: Web-Based Training (WBT) – Approx. 3 hours

Part 2: Instructor-Led Training (ILT) – Approx. 4 hours

Course Outline

This course provides new and young workers with a standardized basic safety awareness program, as required under Ontario Regulation 297/13.

Part 1: Web-Based Training (WBT) – Approx. 3 hours
The online modules cover:
  • The role of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD), the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), and other designated bodies under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
  • Roles and responsibilities of employers, supervisors, and Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) members.
  • Worker rights and duties under OHSA.
  • Learners will build awareness of safe work planning principles and hazard management, including hazard recognition and risk mitigation tools, such as: 
    Energy Wheel, Serious Injury and Fatality Potential (SIFp), Hierarchy of Controls, Common Lifesaving Rules
  • Common hazards present at local member sites and associated acute and chronic health effects. 
  • Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles and concepts.
  • Typical safe work planning tools, documents, and the purpose of each document. 
  • The importance of hazard reporting and available methods for reporting concerns.
  • Emergency preparedness in the Sarnia-Lambton region, including regional communication and alert systems. 
  • Employer responsibilities for supporting a psychologically healthy and safe workplace.
  • Mental health and psychosocial hazards, including available worker supports and resources.
Part 2: Instructor Led Training (ILT) – Approx. 4 hours
The in-class session reinforces key concepts and theories from Part 1 
through:
  • Facilitated discussions
  • Group collaboration
  • Practical examples and demonstrations of the difference between work as intended and work as performed.
  • Applying risk assessment techniques, recognizing distractions, and identifying red flag situations.
  • Use and application of standard workflow documents (e.g., Task Analysis Safety Card, Job Safety Analysis, Safe Work Permits).
  • Understanding organizational response to safety reporting.
  • Shared real-world workplace experiences.
